Module Description


This module introduces students to both qualitative and quantitative approaches to carrying out research. Also, the module describes different research philosophies operating in a public health context so that students are better prepared to undertake critical analyses.

Module Aim


The aim of this module is to enhance students’ understanding and practical application of different methods of scientific investigation and data analysis in a public health context.

Module Learning Outcomes


After completion of the module, students should be able to:
1.    Identify the main differences between qualitative and quantitative research.
2.    Review literature in order to investigate an issue.
3.    Identify a research topic related to Public Health.
4.    Generate a research question in accordance with the guidelines of qualitative or quantitative study.
5.    Develop a research purpose for a qualitative or quantitative study.
6.    Identify a suitable issue for exploring through qualitative or quantitative research.
7.    Apply qualitative or quantitative methods for data collection.
8.    Select a sampling method in order to satisfy a proposed research question.
9.    Identify and apply ethics issues related to research.
10.  Analyse findings in relation to the research objectives and qualitative methods or qualitative methods of data collection.
11.  Produce a report of the findings.
