Module Description
The module identifies different approaches to public health governance, introduces the concepts of health economics and discusses how to use these concepts to debate policy options in planning and financing for public health and for improvements in health services.
Module Aim
The module aims to introduce students to a variety of public health governance approaches and to enable students to utilise the fundamental principles of health economics to inform policy and planning in public health, to familiarise students with various models of health service financing, and the theoretical basis for reducing inequalities and improving quality in the context of a publicly funded health care system.
Module Learning Outcomes
After completion of the module, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of different public health governance approaches.
2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of health economics, health economics methodologies and their role in public health policy formulation, planning, decision making, and evaluation.
3. Critically evaluate the differences in organisational structure and function and discuss various models of health service financing e.g. government budgets, insurance, and donors.
4. Analyse the principles, nature, methods and models of quality improvement in health care in the context of public health.
5. Critically discuss principles and concepts of governance and suggest practical ways to improve health and reduce inequalities using good governance.
