Module Aim

This module aims at equipping students with skills of understanding basic measures used in global public health so as to identify patterns in distribution of diseases within populations, associations and causes of morbidity and mortality across geographical boundaries, and the basic methods of disease control and management. It also equips students with essential knowledge on the types of study designs and their suitability to address a specific research question.

Module Learning Outcomes

After completion of the module, students should be able to:
1.    Examine the key concepts of public health.

3.    Distinguish the types of epidemiological studies.
4.    Investigate disease occurrence and the chain of disease transmission.
5.    Explain how the results of epidemiological studies are used for public health.
6.    Investigate epidemiological characteristics of selected major infectious diseases for public health (e.g. Covid-19, HIV, tuberculosis, influenza, diarrhoeal disease, and malaria) in the developed and developing world, and describe measures of prevention and control transmission.
