Module Description


Health Promotion involves communication on health issues to communities with the objective of preventing diseases/reducing risk and improving health in populations through community engagement for behaviour change at multiple levels i.e., individual, organisational, and community. 

Module Aim 


This module aims at enabling students apply models of predicting and explaining health behaviour in groups of people and using these for developing and implementing health promotion programmes, taking into account the environmental and cultural contexts in which they occur. 

Module Learning Outcomes


After completion of the module, students should be able to:
1.    Analyse the concept of health as a human right of individuals and communities as a whole.
2.    Describe how health promotion relates to disease prevention, improvement of health, and maintenance of wellbeing in populations.
3.    Design health promotion programmes for dealing with specific Public Health challenges and describe how these are successfully implemented and monitored including through identification of risk communities as well as community engagement in responses.
4.    Describe processes by which health concepts of health education, health literacy, and health consciousness as well as behaviour theories aligned to health such as health belief model, social networks, social norms, theory of reasoned action determine health-related lifestyle behaviours and choices.
5.    Describe health protection and health promotion in the context of mass population movement for the purposes of recreation (e.g. tourism), relocation (e.g. working/retiring abroad), or due to forced migration (e.g. as a result of armed conflict or natural disasters).
