Aim of the Programme

The aim of the B.Ed. in Primary Education is to train new teachers to a high standard so that they may in turn teach their pupils to a high standard and positively contribute to their school and communities. The aim is further to train new teachers in such large numbers that they make a significant impact on meeting the targets of access and quality of Primary Education outlined in MIP-1 (National Planning Commission, 2021b) and NESIP (Government of Malawi, 2020).

Learning Outcomes

This Bachelor programme is categorised Level 7 in the draft Malawi Higher Education Qualifications Framework with the following general outcomes expected for the level:

Knowledge

Holders of the qualification should be able to demonstrate understanding of a major discipline with possible areas of specialization in that discipline, including command of the ideas, principles, concepts, chief research methods and problem-solving techniques of the recognized discipline.

Skill

Holders of the qualification should possess critical independent thinking and analysis of the subject matter, and advanced communication with team building and collaborative skills.

Competence

Holders of the qualification should demonstrate knowledge/skill/competence of subject matter in area of specialization, able to conduct research, challenge status quo, bring innovation, entrepreneurship, communicate properly, have technological literacy and lead a diverse team.

Programme Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this programme, students will be able to:

  1. Apply the principles of classroom teaching and management in primary school classes of from standard 1 to standard 8 for a range of subjects.
  2. Interpret the national primary school curriculum.
  3. Select appropriate content to inform their teaching. 
  4. Adopt innovative teaching approaches to meet the needs of a diverse learner population.
  5. Develop curricula relevant to a given target student population.
  6. Apply appropriate assessment tools and techniques to enhance and assess student learning.
  7. Promote the social, psychological, civic and life-skills development of their pupils.
  8. Support the efficient and effective management of a school through collaboration with fellow staff members.
  9. Engage in self-directed learning and continuous professional development.

Entry Requirements

Admission Requirements

·         Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) with 6 credit passes (grades 1-6) including English or international equivalent qualification

·         English proficiency: Grade 6 or better on the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or equivalent English language qualification

·         Copy of valid passport or national ID
