Peace, Citizenship & Intercultural Education: Teaching Methodology and AssessmentModule Details

This module brings together peace education, citizenship education and intercultural education to enable student teachers to learn the content and methods of teaching these subjects and to generate understanding amongst diverse groups of individuals, groups and their cultures. The module covers human rights and the constitution of Malawi before and after the introduction of multiparty politics. The module explores definitions, types and applications of peace, nonviolence, and responsible citizenship locally and globally. 

Module Aim
The aim of the module is to provide student teachers with an understanding of peace, citizenship, and intercultural education so that they may explore their importance in the school, community, nation and the world. The module further seeks to prepare student teachers to engage their learners in appreciating peace, human rights, and cultural diversity, and to use methods of nonviolence and conflict resolution.

Module Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the module, students should be able to:
Peace 
1.    Debate social justice and injustice.
2.    Analyse content and methods of teaching peace in the primary curriculum.
3.    Classify forms of violence and nonviolence.
4.    Describe peace, social justice and nonviolence at the school, community and national level.
5.    Analyse causes of conflicts and ways of preventing conflicts.
6.    Apply peace and nonviolence methods to school, and community problems.
7.    Describe uMunthu/ubuntu, peace and nonviolence methods 
Citizenship 
8.    Define civics education and citizenship.
9.    Examine the various types of citizenship.
10.    Analyse content and methods of teaching citizenship in the primary curriculum.
11.    Relate government, governance and democratic leadership.
12.    Describe the voting processes in elections.
13.    Examine the concept and origins of human rights, human rights abuses and their remedies.
14.    Critique the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi.
15.    Identify local government, administrative structures and revenue systems.
16.    Discuss the principles of road safety.
Intercultural education 
17.    Define the concepts of monoculturalism, multiculturalism and diversity in the education realm.
18.    Investigate the level of acceptance of diversity in the school and the community.
19.    Explain the concepts of equality, equity and diversity.
20.    Identify the characteristics of multicultural societies and schools, the dimensions of cultural differences, identity, taboos, bias, racism, in the society and school.
21.    Cultivate an environment of acceptance and respect towards cultural differences, differences in values while exhibiting open-mindedness and understanding towards anything that is different and unusual.
22.    Apply appropriate educational methods to effectively manage and evaluate a multilingual/multicultural classroom,
23.    Prevent anti-social behaviour such as xenophobia, racism, discrimination, stereotyping and inequality that are not acceptable in a school and social setting.
24.    Build in ICT tools into intercultural activities, in order to engage and communicate.
25.    Infuse intercultural activities such as simulations, role play, visits, events in lesson plans.
