Module Description

The module introduces data and database management systems in managing organizational data and information. It looks at relational database design by converting a conceptual data model to a database schema. The module also makes students aware of the various database models and database systems and provide students with deep knowledge for developing database applications and fundamental knowledge for developing web-based database applications.

Module Aim

The aim of this module is to introduce the concept of database management systems (DBMS) with respect to the relational model, to specify the functional and data requirements for a typical database application and to understand creation, manipulation and querying of data in databases.

Module Learning Outcomes

After completing the module students should be able to:

  1. Critique database models and database systems
  2. Evaluate business information problem and find the requirements of a problem in terms of data.
  3. Design the database schema with the use of appropriate data types for storage of data in database.
  4. Create, databases.
  5. Query and back up databases.
  6. Enhance database applications with regards to security, authorization and optimization
  7. Develop web-based database applications at an intermediate level
  8. Develop advanced queries using the Structured Query Language (SQL)
  9. Research in state-of-the art areas in databases systems
