Module Description


In this module we give a doctoral level introduction to the underlying philosophies of research, the various methodologies and models that are routinely used in research and the importance of defining the research question. These principles provide a foundation for a general understanding and application of quantitative, qualitative and mixed research methods. The coverage of research ethics, triangulation and the dimensions of validity and reliability in research contribute to enhancing the student’s ability to make appropriate decisions and judgements about the research dissertation. 


Module aim


The module aims to provide students with a critical understanding of the philosophy, principles, theories, methodologies, methods, techniques and standards of judgment associated with research for use in their project and for reviewing the literature.


Learning outcomes


Upon completion of this module, the student should be able to: 
1.    Assess the philosophy, principles and methodologies underlying research
2.    Critique the approaches to research and their results as described in the literature 
3.    Construct a research problem and purpose statement.
4.    Construct research questions that align with the problem and purpose statement.
5.    Compare and contrast Qualitative and Quantitative Methodologies.
6.    Evaluate various qualitative data collection procedures.
7.    Compile qualitative and quantitative data.
8.    Summarize qualitative and quantitative data.
9.    Analyze qualitative and quantitative data.
10.  Explore different qualitative designs and data collection possibilities.
11.  Evaluate the purpose of quantitative designs.
12.  Critique quantitative designs.
13.  Triangulate
14.  Apply ethical principles to research design
15.  Perform various sampling methods.
16.  Make appropriate judgements about which approaches to research are most appropriate for their own research enquiries
17.  Develop a research methodology.
