Module Description
The module provides theoretical and practical knowledge related to maintaining the comfort and cleanliness of the hospitality establishments. Housekeeping is a broad area that involves the management of all types of activities that are involved in a hotel, including cleaning, cooking, home maintenance, shopping, laundry, bill pay and more. The module is designed to cover the management all the housekeeping activities along with the basic cleaning strategies.
Module Aim
The module aims to provide comprehensive knowledge so that the student may professionally maintain and manage housekeeping activities.
Module Learning Outcomes
After completing the module students should be able to:
- Describe the role of the housekeeping department in hotel operations and explain the importance of effective communication between housekeeping, the front office and the engineering and maintenance division.
- Identify typical cleaning responsibilities of the housekeeping department and explain how area inventory lists, frequency schedules, performance standards and productivity standards are used to plan and organize the housekeeping department.
- Apply techniques to develop and improve human resource skills through appropriate recruiting, selecting, hiring, training, managing and orienting of staff.
- Manage inventories of recycled and non-recycled items.
- Control expenses in the housekeeping department by using the operating budget as a control tool.
- Display knowledge of the safety and security needs of hospitality operations and how safety and security issues affect housekeeping personnel.
- Display the managerial skills necessary to efficiently operate an on premises laundry operation (OPL).
- Provide an overview of the key issues of housekeeping and maintenance management.
