Module Description

This module explains and demonstrates the architecture, structure, working, data transmission (instruction sets) of a computer system. It also introduces students to the concept of information system and its application in organisations.

Module Aim

The module aims at familiarising students with the various processes and operations that exist within a computer system and the developments in computer hardware and software.

Module Learning Outcomes

After completing the module students should be able to:

  1. Explain the underlying principles of computers.
  2. Identify various hardware and software used in a computer system.
  3. Describe the structure of CPU and Multicore systems
  4. Demonstrate how digital circuits are implemented in the computers.
  5. Describe how data is transferred between various peripheral devices in the computer.
  6. Differentiate between application and systems software and subtypes.
  7. Explain the role of an Information System and technology in the digital world.
  8. Represent data representation and work with different number systems.
  9. Analyse the developments occurring in the Information Technology era from its inception to present time and the future trends.
