Module Description

The course provides students with an understanding of, and ability to apply the tools and methodologies of contemporary finance theory. It explores the financial decision-making processes of organizations, the role of financial managers and the scope/remit of their decision making.

Module Aim

The course aims at exposing students to the main corporate finance principles that would assist them analyse and examined corporate finance in the decision-making process

Module Learning Outcomes

After completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Explain the implications of the overarching strategic objectives of the organization for the finance function.
  2. Discuss the role of the organization’s financial managers in realizing these strategic objectives.
  3. Evaluate the different sources of corporate finance (e.g. equity, debt, retained earnings), and be able to explain the relative advantages and disadvantages of each source.
  4. Determine how risk and the cost of capital impact on investment appraisal, and explain how such factors affect the value of a capital project.
  5. Assess the external and internal influences on a corporation’s capital structure, payout policy and policy in respect of risk management (via insurance, derivatives, and other instruments).
  6. Explain how the corporation’s capital structure, payout policy and risk policy impact upon investment decisions.
