Module Description
This module is to provide an insight to Health Psychology; specifically, how psychological, biological and social factors can influence health and illness. This module enhances students’ critical awareness of the principles of public health and public health practice. It examines the theoretical frameworks and research knowledge to explore the influence of different factors that may affect the quality of health.
Module Aim
This Module aims at providing students with skills and understanding of the importance of Health Psychology in the health care sector, relationship between biological, psychological and social approaches to health and illness, health behaviours and health care in relation to specific topics such as stress, cardiovascular disease and pain. It is also intended to enhance critical thinking upon the evidence which supports public health practice.
Learning Outcomes:
After completing the Module students should be able to:
1. Analyse relationship between biological, social and psychological factors that can affect illness and health
2. Evaluate a variety of theoretical models and approaches to understand public health problems and suggest the best solutions for change
3. Analyse demographic health information in relation to health needs
4. Apply a wide range of strategies to promote and protect health and well-being
