Module Description

The module introduces the role of technology innovation and its connection to management strategy and entrepreneurship. The module covers the process of technological innovation, how best to capture value from innovation, including through intellectual property management, and the development of appropriate technology strategies. It further introduces students to the concepts of entrepreneurship and the financial, legal and management issues associated with establishing a small business (start-up). These latter elements are ultimately brought together through the process of formulating a business plan.

Module Aim

This module aims at equipping students with an understanding of technological change and the process of innovation and its management, linked to customer need, combined with an understanding of entrepreneurship and the practical knowledge of how to establish and manage a small business (start-up).

Module Learning Outcomes

After completing the module students should be able to:

  1. Analyse the role and impact of technology innovation, including information technology, on management strategy
  2. Discuss how technology evolves over time and the implication of that evolution on companies
  3. Explain how companies come up with innovations that meet the needs of their customers
  4. Analyse how companies capture the value generated from their investment in innovation, including through intellectual property management
  5. Develop a technology strategy
  6. Discuss different manifestations of entrepreneurship
  7. Explain the issues associated with starting a small business and the advantages and disadvantages of small businesses
  8. Describe the types of small business, how they can be funded and compare legal identities
  9. Explain the variables influencing small businesses
  10. Understand how small businesses operate
  11. Describe global opportunities for small businesses and entrepreneurs
  12. Understand the challenges faced by entrepreneurs
  13. Develop a business plan for a small start-up technology company
